At the opening news conference for the 15th FINA World Swimming Championships, FINA President Husain Al-Musallam confirmed the importance of this year’s event, which began on Thursday: “I would like to thank the Abu Dhabi Sports Council for their excellent partnership and cooperation which led to the successful event we saw today,” he said.

With this grand finale of the competitive season, the international swimming federation is showcasing many efforts to innovate and include all types of aquatic competition. While the short course swimming competition is the main draw for many inside the spectacular Etihad Arena, there are also concurrent events in high diving and conventional diving as well as open water swimming in the waters of Yas Bay.
In the arena, swimming fans are finding a truly global event, with competitors from more than 180 countries making full use of two superlative swimming pools. Both of these 25-meter jewels were designed by Myrtha Pools and installed in record time – a key consideration given the tight timelines necessitated by hosting the meet in an arena setting.
FINA went out of its way to thank the Italian company for its fast, efficient pool construction. The total required for the pool shell portion of the endeavour was just seven days.
“The world of Aquatics sport has a long history,” says Brent Nowicki, FINA executive director. “It also has a bright future, and we will continue to care for it. And the only way we can care for it is through innovation.”
Myrtha Pools has a history of leading that innovation, dating back to 1987 for international competitions. Since then, Myrtha has participated in five Olympic Games, providing many creative solutions for competitive pools in a wide variety of championship settings.
One result of that legacy is a staggering 146 – sorry, make that 147 – world records attained in a Myrtha Pool. Adding to the list of world records broken in a Myrtha vessel on the first day of FINA World Championship action in Abu Dhabi was Honk Kong’s Siobhan Bernadette Haughey in the women’s 200-meter freestyle (1:50.31). That is likely the first of many marks to fall, as the championship setting in these Myrtha Pools has many more races before the meet is completed on Tuesday.
