A Myrtha pool in the Purdue University
Purdue University dedicated the France A. Córdova Recreational Sports Center, a student-requested $98 million renovation and expansion of the nation’s first general recreation center at a university. The original structure at 148,700 sq. ft. was built in 1957 with an additional 62,500 sq. ft being added on in 1981 and the completed expansion in 2013 bringing the facility to 355,000 sq. ft.
The recreation center, not only added space and equipment but also brings some striking changes in concept. For one, the east and west entrances are connected by a large atrium open to everyone. Various points in the atrium also provide views of new features such as a climbing wall, bouldering wall, and a recreation pool.
This University pool, heated and L-shaped, hosts swimming lessons, a games area dedicated to water basketball and water polo, three lanes for training, hydromassage benches and a large shallow area where you can relax in the pool water.
History, tradition, and success is the foundation of Purdue University.
Named after its benefactor, John Purdue who donated the land and money for its construction in 1869 in West Lafayette, Indiana. Purdue University started with only 39 students, today counts almost 40,000 students and offers over 200 different academic programs.
The university set up the first university flight course as well as building the first university airport, which has given the university the nickname, Cradle of Astronauts.
